Custom Coins for Medical Professionals

Custom Coins for Medical Professionals

Show your support for your facility's medical professionals with challenge coins.

Medical professionals have some of the toughest jobs in the world. Doctors, nurses, physician assistants and others are the backbone of the modern  health care system.

These men and women make literal life-or-death decisions every single day. They require years of training to become proficient in their fields. They work long hours, often with little to no recognition. And far too often, they face the ultimate defeat. Little wonder that many of them eventually get burned out on their jobs.

One way to help prevent that is through recognition programs. Hospital administrators can help keep medical staff motivated and engaged through showing appreciation and honoring their hard work.

Custom challenge coins are an outstanding means to celebrate the dedicated staff who are the most frequently seen faces of your facility. They’re also a perfect way to help new medical staff get off to a promising start in their careers. Consider for a moment what gives custom coins value to the people who receive them.

What Makes Coins Memorable

Custom coins bring people together when they represent significant milestones in the recipients’ lives. By commemorating a shared experience, symbolizing a completed mission or program, and establishing a group identity, coins enhance group camaraderie and cohesion. A nod to tradition also gives the new recipients a legacy to belong to, and a sense that they’re part of something bigger than themselves.

How Medical Facilities Can Use Challenge Coins

Hospitals and other facilities can successfully use custom coins to help new staff members feel at home and welcome them into the institution. Let’s look at some ways challenge coins can be beneficial:

First Day Jitters

All of us can remember our first day on a new job, the nervous excitement as we considered the potential and pitfalls. Now imagine one of those potential pitfalls is the possibility – unlikely, but possible – of making an error that injures or kills a patient. That’s enough to make any new doctor, nurse or technician anxious.

Getting off to a good start at their new facility and feeling like a part of the team can help reduce that anxiety. That’s where custom challenge coins can help.

Resident Match Coins for July

Medical school graduates typically begin their post-graduate residency at teaching hospitals in July. The first day of the month, the newly minted interns and residents start what can be a three- to seven-year journey toward their independent practice.

The new residents and their respective facilities have linked up through a process known as Resident Match. Not unlike a sports league draft, the process matches participants and their hospitals based on their mutual interests, needs and abilities. It’s a fraught process, complete with multiple interviews, waiting to see if the hospital you want wants you, and vice versa. It’s a stressful time. Once the matches are announced in March, there’s still the wait for the starting date in July.

Hospitals can help the newcomers feel more at home with first-day resident match coins. Coins that depict the facility and note the date can encourage the residents to feel a part of the team, and give them a keepsake to remember the official first day of their medical career.

Nursing Welcome Coins

New nurses, fresh from passing their boards, can be intimidated at the thought of starting a career on a floor full of more experienced peers. Once again, this is where custom coins can make a difference. Offer welcome coins imprinted with the facility name, logo and mission. You can even include the particular floor or department they’re assigned to, to make it more specific.

Consider a welcome bundle with a challenge coin, a custom tumbler or water bottle and a keychain. They’re a perfect orientation gift to help new team members feel welcome and at home. Not just for first-job nurses, these gifts are also an excellent way to greet traveling nurses coming to your facility.

Nurses’ Day Coins

Did you know that more people leave jobs because they don’t feel recognized and appreciated than for higher pay? High stress professions such as nursing often suffer from such conditions, with resultant high turnover. Studies have shown that morale and acknowledgement go hand in hand.

Nursing coins make excellent keepsakes for Nurses’ Day. Honor your dedicated nurses with coins that recognize their contributions to the organization. A well-curated gift box containing 2 to 4 additional items shows a thoughtful approach.

Designing Coins for Medical Professionals

Creating a great coin design for doctors, nurses, physician assistants and technicians doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with some basic images and add personalization specific to your institution.

For example, the most common symbol for nurses is the Lamp of Nursing. It represents the lamp carried by Florence Nightingale, the founder of nursing as we know it today. Nurses often wear pins featuring the lamp.

The lamp image is based on Nightingale’s ward rounds as she tended to wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. She carried a lamp as she went through the wards at night, earning her the nickname of “The Lady With The Lamp.”

Physician pins may feature the Rod of Aesclepius, the symbol of medicine. It features a single staff, with a single serpent entwined around it. While the caduceus is also sometimes worn, it is not an accurate symbol of medicine. While it is similar to a Rod of Aesclepius, the caduceus features a staff with two entwined serpents and often has wings at the top.

While you might occasionally see the caduceus on a website related to nursing, it’s not typically an accurate nursing profession indicator.
