While there are multiple stories about how they began, the most common one traces their origins back to World War I, when a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps had coins made for his squad. A squad member was shot down and captured in enemy territory. He was able to escape from custody, but without any form of identification. When he showed his coin to French troops, they were able to confirm that he was an American and not a German spy. They escorted him safely back to his unit.
