What materials are your challenge coins made from?

Our coins are typically made from zinc in most cases. They can be made of brass for an additional charge. The additional charge varies by coin design and size.

Why Zinc or Brass?

Zinc

We use zinc because its high strength and attractive finish make it perfect for our custom coins. It’s ideal for coins large or small, and even 3D . We can include great detail. When polished, especially when plated with one of our standard finishes , it creates an elegant appearance suitable for virtually any design.

Zinc offers multiple advantages for most orders, starting with cost. It’s significantly less expensive than brass. Furthermore, the coins are lighter than brass, resulting in lower shipping costs. On the other hand, zinc’s lower weight gives a coin a less “high end” feel than brass. The softer metal can also be scratched or dented more easily over time.

Brass

Brass coins have long been the traditional choice for military challenge coins. They offer a classic style, as well as a definite weight. That feeling of heft gives coin recipients a sense of value, of something solid and permanent.

Brass also offers better long-term durability than zinc, and outstanding plating quality. For military and heirloom coins, the choice is clear. Either way, a little routine care keeps a coin looking its best for years.
